Tour and Race stand up paddle boards are designed for flatwater cruising. Flatwater means out of the surf zone. These boards excel in choppy, rough conditions but because they have little rocker (they have a flatter profile) and tend to be long they have no business catching waves. A "flatwater" board has a displacement hull that cuts through the water (much like a kayak) rather than a crossover / surf style SUP that just pushes water in front of it.
Being long and narrow makes them track and glide much more efficiently than a typical crossover SUP. Additional features commonly found on these boards are lashing points for small gear bags, even a neoprene traction pad to bring the dog along!
